What does it mean to be spiritual?

Make sure you also checked out the video below too!

What does being spiritual mean to you?  What do you think of when you hear the word “spiritual” or “spirituality.”  When some people think of spirituality, they think of religion, or they think of crystals, vegetarianism or veganism, tree hugging, not shaving for females, or hippie types, etc.  But why do we associate things of an external nature to a label that has everything to do with an inner state of being?  That is not to say that a spiritual person can’t exhibit these characteristics, but these characteristics alone do not mean someone is spiritual.  In fact, I have found that ego plays a major role for some people that do think spirituality is of an external nature.

Spirituality has less to do with the external and everything to do with the eternal.  Spirituality is to be in a spiritual state of being.  To be of spirit.  To be in connection and coherence with your inner self/higher self.  There is that common quote, “If the voice in your head is you, then who’s the one listening to it?  The thing about this is, how often do we as humans explore ourselves outside of our thinking?  How often do we question ourselves about ourselves?  Our thinking can say, “I am ______________” but do we ever ask ourselves anything about these statements we make about us?  If we tell ourselves that we express love to those around us, but we never actually say hi to a stranger, tell other people we love them or express love in other ways, how accurate is that statement?  How accurate would it be for someone to say “I always express love whenever I can to those around me,” but never, or sparingly, do so?  The truth is, it’s not.  Humans don’t like to be wrong, especially when it comes to being wrong about themselves, and ego will build up a wall around this false sense of self, self sabotage so it can self-validate, and we can remain being right about being wrong.

I would come across men, who will say, “If a man is interested in a woman, he will pursue her first.”  But then when they see someone across the room they are interested in, they don’t pursue them.  Not only is this statement a sweeping generalization of all men, the person would have a false sense of self that is only in coherence with their thinking, unawareness of self.  The ego.

To be connected with our selves, our spirit, which is what we are in truth, ego needs to be in alignment with spirit, to our best ability.  To be spiritual is to be aware of self and to be on a journey towards this awareness and coherence of ego and spirit.  Spirituality is to be on this path towards self.  There is a “you” in the middle of it for a reason.

Self includes ego.  Ego serves its purpose, but ego can also be to our detriment and lead us into less than fulfilling and depressing lives and inner states of being.  We don’t need to completely dissolve our ego, that will never happen. What we can do is allow our egos to work with us and not against us.
