New year, new you right? Not so fast….
Many people want to change something about themselves in order to better themselves in one way or another. Whether it be quitting smoking, losing weight, reducing the time you spend on your phone, or any other change, people sometimes either wait until the new year to do it or they don’t even make the decision to take a look at what they can change until the new year.
Those who wish to quit smoking or lose weight will say, “That will be my New Year’s resolution” in June and wait six months to implement the change. Some will say, “A new year is coming up, I should make a New Year’s resolution and make some positive changes inside of myself, I wonder what I can do.” Making a change and self-reflection usually goes unnoticed until December of each year. And many fall off of their New Year’s resolutions once they make them as well. I see it at the gym each year, the gym is packed January 1st, and as the year progresses it gets less busy.
I’m not against New Year’s resolutions whatsoever, but what I do want to do is offer a different perspective and highlight the issues when it comes to New Year’s resolutions. Especially this year being ripe with negative connotation and a new year being what has brought some hope to people.
I have a question for you. If you are someone that wants to make a change, why not do it now? If it’s June and you want to quit smoking or lose weight, why not start now? There is no other time than now. If not now, when? Making it a New Year’s resolution is not going to make the change any easier to make. It will not somehow make the results any greater. The only thing that you’re doing by putting the change off by waiting, is delaying any potential result as well as possibly decreasing your willingness to make that change when the time comes. In other words, who is to say that when New Year’s Eve comes around, you will actually implement the change, maybe you will lose your motivation in the interim? The only moment in time that ever exists is now. If you want to make a change, don’t wait – just do!
What about those people who don’t have anything on their mind that they want to change. The people that look for ideas in December on what to have as their New Year’s resolution. The question I have for you is, why are you waiting until December to do self reflection and see what you can change in you? You’re not much unlike those who DO have an idea of what they want to change and wait on it. Because you’re still waiting. You’re waiting until December to take a look at yourself and think, “What are some things that I can change about myself for the better? Again, why not now? Why not continuously decide to self-reflect and see what you can change, now.
The same thing rolls around every December. In recent years, it seems like it’s always been negative. “Too many celebrities died”, or, this year was coronavirus. Every year it seems that the masses have a reason to give the middle finger to the current year, and have a positive outlook for the following year. As if another trip around the sun and a different number is going to automatically change something.
A trip around the sun and a new number is not going to automatically change anything. It is up to us individually to make the changes that we want to see in ourselves and in our lives. And it is up to us to be the ones to always be on the lookout for things that we can change inside of ourselves to better ourselves. And it’s up to us to not do a disservice to ourselves and wait on making those changes.
Why wait for a new year to self reflect? Why wait for a new year to make a change? Don’t wait, do it now. It’s the only time we’ll ever have.
